Terms of use

The terms on which this site is read

Information about the law of Trinidad and Tobago, published by an attorney in practice here. Reading it is not the same as being advised, and this page says where that line falls.

In force from 28 September 2026. If this page changes, that date changes with it.

Nothing here is legal advice

Every page on this site is general information about the law of Trinidad and Tobago. None of it is legal advice, and none of it was written about your matter. The law changes, it applies differently to different facts, and a statement that is right in general can be wrong for you in particular.

Do not act on anything here, and do not decide against acting, without advice on your own facts.

Reading this does not make you a client

An attorney-client relationship begins when counsel has agreed in writing to act for you, and not before. Reading these pages does not begin it. Sending an enquiry does not begin it. A first conversation about whether he is able to help does not begin it either.

Until it has begun, what you send may not carry the protection that attaches to what a client tells an attorney. What that means in practice is set out on the privacy page, and it is worth reading before you write.

Time matters more than most people expect

Nearly every right has a deadline, and some are short: a challenge to a decision of a public body can be out of time in three months. A right that is out of time is gone, however good it was. If something has happened, the useful step is advice on it early, rather than more reading.

Where counsel practises

Suraj Sakal is an attorney-at-law admitted in Trinidad and Tobago, and this site describes the law of Trinidad and Tobago. Nothing on it is an offer to practise anywhere else, or advice on the law of anywhere else. A person or a business outside the country is welcome to enquire about a matter that is here.

No promises about outcomes

Nothing on this site is a promise, a guarantee or a prediction about how any matter will end. It is why the site carries no results and no testimonials: no two matters are alike, and what happened in one says nothing reliable about what will happen in yours.

What the photographs are

Apart from the portraits of counsel and the pictures of the chambers, the photographs and the short films on this site are illustrations. They do not show real matters, real clients, real hearings or real courtrooms, and nothing should be read into them.

Accuracy

The pages are written carefully, against the law as it stood when they were written. The law moves, and a page is not always revised on the day it does. Nothing here is warranted to be current, complete or correct, and any date, figure or requirement that matters to you should be confirmed before you rely on it.

Links to other places

Where a page points to a court, a registry, a statute or anything else outside this site, it does so for convenience. Those places are not under counsel’s control, and nothing on them is adopted by the link.

What belongs to whom

The text, the photographs, the crest and the design of this site belong to Suraj Sakal or are used with his permission. You are welcome to read it, to print a page for your own use, and to quote a short passage with attribution and a link. Republishing the text as your own, or using the name or the crest, is not.

Availability

The site is offered as it stands. It may be unavailable at times, for maintenance or for reasons outside anyone’s control, and no undertaking is given that it will be reachable at any particular moment.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, counsel is not liable for loss arising from reliance on anything published on this site.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited. That includes liability for fraud, and it includes the professional obligations counsel owes a client in a matter actually taken on. Those are not touched by anything on this page.

Governing law

These terms, and anything arising out of the use of this site, are governed by the law of Trinidad and Tobago and are subject to the jurisdiction of its courts.

If these terms change

The date at the top changes with them. Using the site after that is acceptance of the version then published.

What this site does with what you tell it is set out separately.
